STORY #1 — Preserve and Defend the Right to Another Referendum
As predicted, winter has returned, and with it the General Assembly and our law-writing legislators. Also, as predicted, Mayor Stoney made the casino his top and (really) only priority. He sent a letter to the eight members of the legislature last week to make sure that they were aware of that and then sent it out on social media platforms so we could all be made aware of the already patently obvious.
It’s not like we didn’t see this coming. When the Mayor and Council crafted their legislative wish-list last month it was so obvious we noted: The City’s annual proposals for Legislative Priorities for the Virginia General Assembly always include requests for changes or additions to state code for local flexibility in dealing with problems like housing, public safety, the environment, taxes etc. But this year, the city’s list is essentially:
