ALT #1 — OFF THE BEATEN PATH: Climbing Kilimanjaro
One Richmonder reached new heights this summer most of us will never achieve but sure can admire. Charles Taylor wrote a long piece in The Richmond Free Press this week about Robert Dortch, who summited atop all 19,342 feet of Mount Kilimanjaro this summer along with his Tanzanian guide, Emmanuel Kimaro.

“I’m humbled and honored by this moment and what this experience can mean for me, for my sons, my family and hopefully, black people. That we can dream a different kind of dreams,” he wrote in his journal the next day.

But Mr. Dortch is not only one of the few African-Americans to summit Kilimanjaro each year; according to his guide Kimaro, only about 10 percent summit solo and not with a group. And only about …
