You can find the 5 main stories from Friday’s edition here, and today features the “ALT 5” stories for a nice, leisurely, read. Enjoy!

This week check out our five stories on:

  • Your chance to get some free tickets to Broadway in Richmond and open young eyes to the stage (and a the very least look at the upcoming season schedule);

  • A great quote (and excerpt) about the smacking of desperation that accompanies the Mayor’s Approve-My-Casino-and-Get-A-Trust-Fund-For-Kids vote scam;

  • The honoring of “The Dean” of Church Hill who served the community for decades and was a man filled with purpose, action, and a gentle authenticity;

  • A double dose of positive news from two organizations working every day to help fill food pantries to those in need — one for people, and one for animals (and their families);

  • One of Richmond’s oldest and most popular diners looks to add a new item to their famous and delicious menu — dinner.

THE ALT 5

ALT #1 — OFF THE BEATEN PATH: Broadway in Richmond, Gratis
Richmond is pretty fortunate to be able to see some of Broadway’s greatest and hottest works without the expense of traveling to New York, getting a hotel room, paying top dollar for seats and navigating the hell that is Times Square. Instead, you can enjoy many of the great shows here at the Altria Theater and the Broadway In Richmond series which has been running for decades.

And this year, they have a deal that can’t be beat. The Richmond Performing Arts Alliance is teaming up with Broadway In Richmond by offering free tickets for RPAA Nights! So if you have never been to Broadway (or off Broadway), or to see a Broadway traveling show at the Altria, then this season might be your chance.

RPAA has an education arm for children (without requiring a casino) and will be offering up to 100 tickets per show for students and their parents to each of the six different performances this season between October 2023 and June 2024. The shows this season include Frozen, Annie, Six, To Kill A Mockingbird, Tina, Grinch, and Beetlejuice.

Starting this Friday (September 15), you can register on their web site (here) for tickets to a Wednesday night performance to a show during the season. So check or clear your calendar and click here for the specific dates available. The tickets will include a pre-show educational component that complements each show’s theme.
